General rule: dont hang out in blindspots, especially in a small car.

Here’s a GIF:
Second, what’s going on with this:

That looked fun. Doing highway speeds backwards with zero visibility due to airbags. Driver did a good job keeping that under control.

1. Don’t drive in blindspots
2. Keep your RV out of the left lane

I’m assuming he lives in
an orthogonal dimension where everything is 90 degrees out of phase. Including the temperature.

Well, that might actually explain now the RV driver completely failed to see the FR- S.

1. Good work on the gif.
2. I’d bet the 156 is the field of view on the dash cam.

It specifically has the unit “F” attached to it, so while that’s a possibility , don’t think it applies here.

There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as an Espace and as tuneless as an I nfiniti . It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between Saab and LS substitution , and it lies between the f it of man’s g ears and the S ummit of his purchases . This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Highway Zone.

Is it somehow possible he didn’t see it?
Just shows you should never hang out to the right of anyone...

What’s the point of towing a huge Suburban behind an extremely large RV? I don’t think that you can get those with a manual. The only possible solution that I can think up to tow one of those would be to le
a

e
the engine running.

Maybe camera temp? I imagine sunny California + black camera housing + natural tendency for small cameras to get toasty (like GoPros) = 156*F?

Yeah, I hate passing tractor trailers on the right, but when I do I always make sure I can get past them quickly. Scary place to be.

Looks like the RV was passing the Chevy, and didn’t want to stay in the left lane any longer than necessary in order to do so . He ga ve the C hevy a nice following distance, instead of cutting right back over, but s till failed the check that blind spot though.
But I suppose the real question is- WHY did the FR-S merge left? The right lane wasn’t ending. And there was no ramp traffic to avoid either.

There are special kits you buy to temporarily disconnect the drive wheels for freewheel towing on an automatic 4x4

i’ m guessing the FR-S wanted to be in the left lane but was taking his time getting there.

I’m guessing the RV had just gotten over before the video starts to pass the black car. The FR-S passing on the right, isn’t even on his radar. He see he’s clear of the black car, and that it changed lanes, and think he’s good to go. Another reason why all 86s/Miatas/etc should be painted in bright colors and have aftermarket exhausts.

Did the FR-S driver have a good reason to want the left lane? I don’t see any. Before the crash happens, the RV driver actually appears to have better lane discipline than the others. He’s also the only one I see signalling lane changes .

This is one of those situations where the FR-S is not in the wrong but could have prevented the accident by driving defensively, and not merging into the middle lane until they were well past the RV.
I can also see the RV driver checking that they have cleared the black SUV but not seeing the FR-S right fucking there in their right front corner. This situation s
ucks, and I would be curious to know how the cops interpret this, I’m assuming the ticket goes to the RV for failure to yield.

If there’s no reason for the FR-S to move left, how are they not in the wrong?

Lane was free and they changed into the lane they wanted to drive in. There is no rule that says you need to stay in y
our lane.

“keep right except to pass” is law in most states, exact wording varies.

I almost always drive in the middle lane on a 3 lane freeway whether there is traffic or not. My observation
is that the FRS driver screwed up to by not being a defensive driver and noticing that the RV would probably not see their
car and would likely
want to change back into the middle lane. However t
hey were not in the wrong
because their car was occupying the lane well before the RV indicated and started to change lanes
.
Since I am not well versed on these things this is what AAA says:
“ Generally, the right lane of a freeway is for entering and exiting the traffic flow. It is a staging lane , for use at the beginning and end of your freeway run. The middle lanes are for through traffic, and the left lane is for passing. If you are not passing someone, you should not be driving in the left lane .”

Not for an auto box, I don’t fully understand but it’ll fuck your car up.

If the automatic transmission doesn’t rely on an external pump to move the fluid and can be forced into neutral you can usually flat tow it . The issue with a lot of autos is that they often rely on the engine to run a pump that pumps the trans fluid through the cooler to keep it from overheating.

Nearly all automatics have only one oil pump and it’s driven by the input shaft. You can tow these on neutral for short distances but it’s not healthy for the box. No lubrication, but many moving parts with plenty of friction .
Some rare automatics have a second oil pump driven by the output shaft. With these a car can be towed more saf el y and even push started. Chrysler’s early TorqueFlite is the best example of these. Chrysler simplified the box and the second pump was removed in 1966 . Nearly all double pump models were also push button shifted.

D ude has the PIT maneuver down pat, (I would be so PO’d if I were driving that BRZ... five bucks the RV tells his insurance carrier “I was minding my own business and that BRZ just came over on me.”)
